The Slammers formed in the summer of 2003 to allow children with cognitive disabilities the opportunity to learn to play baseball.
The players range from third to 8th grade and are mentored by volunteers, including local players from the Glencoe Baseball Association, who help teach the rules of baseball and back up the fielders.
The intra-squad teams begin with warm up drills and learn some fundamentals before the actual game. A batting tee is available for those who are not yet able to hit a pitched ball, and numbered orange cones mark the bases. Baseball uniforms and color-coded jerseys add to the thrill of team play.
Parents assist with pitching a 12-inch softball, coaching, and batting.
Slammers play from mid-May through early July on Saturdays from 3:00 to 4:30 pm at the field behind Glencoe Community Center, 999 Greenbay Road, Glencoe, IL. On occasion, we have outings at the parks of the Chicago professional baseball teams.
A modest fee per child covers the uniforms, snacks provided at each game, and trophies awarded at the end of the season.
